Your itinerary

Day 1
Bilbao

Bilbao is an architectural work of art, consisting of traditional and avant-garde buildings that are truly unique. Sights abound in all directions even on your transfer from Bilbao Airport to the Gran Hotel Domine. The 5-star hotel, which was completely redesigned in 2019, is particularly impressive because of its exceptional location directly opposite the Guggenheim Museum. The large hotel terrace offers spectacular views of the extraordinary deconstructivist-style building and is the perfect place to enjoy an aperitif. The Porsche Experience team takes this opportunity to give you an exciting overview of the coming days. This will be followed by dinner at the hotel restaurant.

Did you know...? Jeff Koons is well-known in Bilbao for a brightly coloured canine. ‘Puppy’ – a giant topiary dog and arguably his most famous work of art – is located between the Gran Hotel Domine and the Guggenheim Museum.

Day 2
Bilbao – Elciego

Your next morning begins in typical Spanish laid-back style: with a relaxing breakfast. Late in the morning, a guided tour through the world-famous Guggenheim Museum will offer you fascinating glimpses of its outstanding collection, known in particular for its installations and video art. After lunch at the stylish museum bistro, your Porsche model is waiting for you to hop in and let the driving fun begin. The traditional Basque Country and Urkiola Natural Park will delight you with their sinuous roads and picturesque views. And although the journey itself is the destination, today’s leg ends in Elciego. The oldest town in the La Rioja region is famous for the Hotel Marqués de Riscal, designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry. A guided tour of the wine cellar, along with a wine tasting, will build an appetite for more, and thus, the fine cuisine at the Michelin-star Restaurante Marqués de Riscal will bring your day to a perfect end.

Did you know...? Despite its flamboyant style, the hotel offers a perfect symbiosis of design and the local terrain. In its titanium and stainless-steel exterior, Frank Gehry integrated the colours of the wine-growing estate of Herederos del Marqués de Riscal: pink, representing red wine; gold, representing the bottle netting; and silver, representing the bottle cap.

Day 3
Elciego –
Casalarreina – Elciego

The legendary wine-growing region of Rioja is one of the most famous in all of Europe, thanks in part to its soil which is predominantly made up of white limestone and reddish-grey clay. Today, after a quiet start, the black asphalt of Rioja plays host to the world-famous sports cars from Zuffenhausen. A thrilling drive past picturesque vineyards is topped off by lunch in an idyllic setting. After your return to Hotel Marqués de Riscal in the early afternoon, you will have ample time to review the impressions of the day. The evening is also all about famous wine, taking you on a guided tour of the nearby Campillo wine-growing estate. It is home to the CAMPILLO CREATIVO exhibition, which creates a unique connection between contemporary art and the art of grape harvesting.

Did you know...? Every year on June 29, the great ‘wine battle’ is celebrated in the La Rioja region. The ‘batalla del vino’ is said to date back to a dispute between the neighbouring villages of Haro and Miranda de Ebro. During the annually re-enacted battle, the ‘rivals’ fling litres of wine at each other before sharing a feast of reconciliation at the Plaza de la Paz. If you really want to be part of this festival, you come all dressed in white.

Day 4
Elciego –
Pamplona – Bidarray

The morning leg to Pamplona is all about the pleasure of driving in the midst of an idyllic landscape. The route from Elciego to Pamplona via Logroño is enough to make your heart leap for joy with its stunning panoramic views and roads that are just perfect for your Porsche. Pamplona will give you an opportunity to refuel – with lunch at Restaurant Zanpa directly at the Plaza del Castillo. You may also want to spend a little more time in the almost 2,000-year-old city and experience its beauty with a guided tour. Or simply take a leisurely stroll around and explore the city for yourself. Next, as you head towards France, the winding mountain roads of the Pyrenees offer further driving pleasure. Here, the power of your Porsche really comes into its own. Bidarray has further attractions to offer: At the Auberge Ostape hotel, you can visit the private Porsche museum L’Ècurie Ostape owned by Henri Parent. If you can tear your eyes away from the Porsche 918 Spyder, Porsche 911 R and other legendary Porsche models, you can enjoy an elegant dinner on the terrace of the hotel restaurant, accompanied by magnificent views.

Did you know...? The famous bull run through the old city of Pamplona, the Encierro, is the highlight of the festivities in honour of San Fermín. Almost all residents and visitors to the city dress in white – accessorised with a red scarf – for the controversial spectacle, where they cheer on the brave runners from all over the world. The ‘Mozos’ attempt to reach the bullfighting arena located 875 metres away ahead of the charging herd. Mucha suerte, or good luck!

Day 5
Bidarray –
Larrau – Bidarray

After a hearty breakfast against the backdrop of magnificent views, it is nice to be spoilt for choice. If you wish to spend a day in Biarritz, you can make a stop at the elegant port city. Or you can get back behind the wheel and take a drive to the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in France and the Navarra region in Spain. After dynamic stretches of road have satisfied your appetite for curves, treat your palate with a delicious lunch in Larrau. If you would rather take advantage of the amenities at the Auberge Ostape hotel at your leisure, you can stay on in Bidarray. However you choose to spend your day, be sure not to miss the casual barbecue dinner.

Did you know...? Elegant Biarritz is particularly known for its beaches and surf spots, as well as for its practically endless shopping opportunities. Whether it is stylish designer boutiques, multi-brand stores, jewellers or the Galeries Lafayette, the main shopping street Georges Clemenceau and the surrounding alleyways offer everything you could possibly desire. After a shopping spree, the Market Hall offers the perfect opportunity to refuel. This temple of local delicacies reflects the way of life in Biarritz and the soul of Basque cuisine like nothing else.

Day 6
Bidarray –
San Sebastián – Bilbao

Waking up in France, but arriving in Donostia-San Sebastián in Spain in time for lunch. In a Porsche, every drive seems too short, whatever the distance. At the very least, a culinary pit stop can put off the end of your trip for a little while longer. But before that, the main attraction is once again the joy of driving and the varied and contrasting landscape of the Basque Country – from the green hills around Bidarray to the rocky Atlantic coast. Sadly, your exquisite lunch in the outskirts of Donostia-San Sebastián will be over too soon. Your last ocean vista may have you wishing you could stop time. Fortunately, a drive in your Porsche back to Bilbao will soothe your pangs of farewell. After arriving at Gran Hotel Domine and a relaxing break, a short evening walk will take you to a Basque restaurant, where you can enjoy the last evening of the journey in an authentic ambience.

Did you know...? Spain is made up of 17 autonomous communities. The most famous of these is the Basque region, which includes a Spanish part and a French part. After years of oppression during the Franco dictatorship, the language of the Basque people, Euskara, has once again become an integral part of the local culture thanks to successful support initiatives. So, offering a friendly ‘kaixo’ (hello) will certainly draw a surprised smile in these parts.

Day 7
Bilbao

It goes without saying that you cannot see all of Northern Spain in just one trip. But today, it is time to say ‘agur’ (goodbye)! And may you be back soon. For now, however, you will be transferred back to Bilbao Airport and then board your flight home, taking with you a host of precious new memories.

Did you know...? If you have some time for a stroll through Bilbao, you should stop by the Azkuna Zentroa. The former corn exchange was transformed into a unique cultural centre in 2010 under the guidance of renowned architect Phillippe Starck. Pay a visit to the entrance hall to marvel at its 43 different types of columns representing the myriad of cultures, architectures, wars and religions all across the world, as well as the significance of art.
